LPG Saves 46 Percent per Liter but 140 km/h Burns 67 Percent More Fuel

LPG costs 53% less per liter but burns 15% more. Driving 140 vs 80 costs $1,066/year extra. Will half a tank last 350 km?

The fuel gauge reads half. The destination is 350 km away. The highway sign says 130 but the GPS insists on 140. And somewhere in the back of your mind, a number: $1.60 per liter.

That number follows you for the entire drive. It multiplies with every kilometer, compounds with every burst of acceleration, and quietly doubles when the needle drops below a quarter tank at a rest stop charging premium prices. Most drivers think about fuel cost exactly once - at the pump. The rest of the trip, it is invisible.

Three calculators make it visible. One compares gasoline with LPG over 5 years. Another shows what 140 km/h actually costs compared to 80. The third tells you whether your half tank will survive a 350 km trip - or where to stop.


06:45 - The LPG question

The car next to you at the morning parking lot has a green "LPG" sticker on the fuel cap. You have seen the prices at the pump: $0.75 per liter for autogas, $1.60 for gasoline. That is a 53% discount. Sounds like a no-brainer.

It is not that simple. LPG has lower energy density per liter than gasoline. Your engine needs about 15% more liters to cover the same distance on autogas. So an 8 L/100 km gasoline car becomes a 9.2 L/100 km LPG car.

Run the math:

  • Gasoline: 8 L x $1.60 = $12.80 per 100 km
  • LPG: 9.2 L x $0.75 = $6.90 per 100 km

The saving is $5.90 per 100 km. Not 53% - more like 46%. Still enormous. Over 20,000 km per year, that is $1,180 in annual savings.

But there is an upfront cost. A Gen IV sequential LPG system costs $800-1,500 to install. Gen V for turbocharged engines: $1,500-2,500. At $1,500 and 20,000 km/year, payback takes 15.3 months - or 25,424 km.

The breakeven sits around 10,000 km/year. Below that, the conversion struggles to pay for itself within the system's typical 5-year service life. Above 15,000 km, it is almost always worth it - the question becomes which system, not whether to convert.

Gen IV vs Gen V - which conversion?

MPI engines (port injection) take Gen IV systems at $800-1,500. The overhead is 10-15%, installation is straightforward, and almost any LPG shop can do it. Turbocharged GDI/TSI engines need Gen V at $1,500-2,500 because the injectors work differently. Premium brands like Vialle and Prins bring the overhead down to 8-12% but cost $2,000-3,500. The math still works - a turbo driver at 25,000 km/year recoups even a $2,500 conversion in under 14 months.

One factor the calculator cannot capture: resale value. In countries where LPG is common (Poland, Italy, Turkey, Netherlands), a quality conversion actually adds value. In markets where it is rare (US, UK), buyers may offer less. Factor that into your decision if you sell cars every 3-4 years.

You are on the highway now. Cruise control set to 130. The car in the left lane passes you at what looks like 150. The one on the right crawls at 90.

Who is paying more?

Air resistance grows with the square of speed. At 80 km/h, your engine fights a manageable amount of drag. At 140 km/h, it fights three times more. The engine has to burn extra fuel just to push air out of the way, and that fuel cost is not linear - it accelerates.

A car that burns 7 L/100 km at 90 km/h will burn:

  • 6.5 L at 80 km/h (the sweet spot)
  • 7.6 L at 100 km/h
  • 9.2 L at 120 km/h
  • 11.7 L at 140 km/h

That last number is 80% higher than the 80 km/h baseline. On a 300 km trip at $1.60/L, the difference between 80 and 140 is $24.86. You save 96 minutes. That works out to $2.58 for every 10 minutes saved.

Is that worth it? Depends on your hourly rate. If you earn $50/hour, saving 96 minutes is worth $80 - so driving 140 makes financial sense. If you earn $15/hour, those 96 minutes are worth $24, and you are spending $24.86 on fuel to save them. You lose money by driving fast.

The gap between 80 and 140 is $1,066 per year. That is enough for two sets of tires, or three full services, or - if you converted to LPG - almost an entire year of fuel savings wiped out by speed.

The uncomfortable truth: most of the "I am in a hurry" driving on highways saves less than 15 minutes on a typical 200-300 km trip. The fuel cost of those 15 minutes ranges from $5 to $15. Over a year of weekly highway trips, that adds up to $250-750 in invisible spending.


12:15 - The half-tank gamble

Lunch break. You check the fuel gauge. Half a tank - 25 liters in a 50-liter sedan. Destination: 350 km away. The split is roughly 80% highway, 20% city (getting out of town and arriving).

City consumption: 8.5 L/100 km. Highway: 5.8 L. The blended number: 6.3 L/100 km.

Total fuel needed: 22.2 liters. You have 25. That is 2.8 liters of margin. Enough? Technically yes. Comfortably? Barely. A strong headwind or heavy traffic through a city bypass could eat that margin in 50 km.

The calculator says zero refueling stops. But that assumes your trip computer numbers are accurate and conditions are average. If you are carrying four passengers plus luggage (add 10-20% to consumption), the blended number jumps to about 7.2 L/100 km and you need 25.2 liters. Now you are 0.2 liters short. One passenger changes the answer from "yes" to "no."

For longer trips the math gets more interesting. Fuel needs for common distances at 80/20 highway-city split with 8 L city / 5.5 L highway:

The highway station premium

One detail that is easy to overlook: fuel prices at highway rest stops run 10-20% higher than city stations. On a 500 km trip requiring 30 liters, that premium costs $3-6 extra. If you need two stops on a 1,000 km drive, the premium grows to $6-12. Filling up before you hit the highway saves real money - even if it means starting the trip 5 minutes later.

The same logic applies to food, coffee and snacks at rest stops. But that is a different calculator.


Three numbers from one tank of fuel

Here is what one day of driving reveals:

1. LPG cuts fuel cost by 46% per 100 km - not the 53% the pump price suggests, because your engine burns 15% more liters on autogas. At 20,000 km/year, the $1,500 conversion pays back in 15 months and nets $4,400 over five years.

2. Driving 140 instead of 80 costs $1,066/year on 15,000 highway km. Each 10 km/h above the sweet spot costs roughly $2-3 per 10 minutes saved. Below $25/hour income, driving fast loses money.

3. A 350 km trip on half a tank works - if you are driving alone or with one passenger. A full car with luggage tips the balance. The difference between "enough" and "not enough" can be a single extra person or a roof box.

4. Highway rest stop fuel costs 10-20% more. Filling up before the highway on a 500 km trip saves $3-6. Small number, but it compounds over a year of regular trips.

5. The single biggest fuel savings come from combining LPG conversion with moderate speed. An LPG car driven at 90 km/h instead of 130 saves roughly $2,400/year compared to gasoline at 130 - almost $200/month.
