The spreadsheet had three columns. Column A: car. Column B: bus pass. Column C: bicycle. The numbers were not close.

A project manager at a mid-size company ran them after moving to a new apartment 15 km from the office. The old apartment was 4 km away - walking distance, no transport cost. The new one forced a decision. Buy a parking spot downtown? Upgrade the car insurance? Or try something different?

The answer came from three calculators and one Saturday morning with a coffee. This article walks through the same exercise, step by step, with the exact inputs and outputs.


Stage 1: The car baseline - $454.48 per month

The starting point. A compact gasoline car, 8 L/100 km in city traffic, fuel at $1.60/L. The commute: 15 km one way, 22 days per month.

Stage 2: The bus pass - $125 per month

A monthly transit pass in this city: $75. That covers every bus, tram and metro line, unlimited rides. No parking, no insurance, no service appointments.

The catch: occasional late-night Uber rides when the bus stops running. Budget $50 per month for those. Total: $125 per month.

Annual transit cost: $1,500. Savings versus the car: $3,953.76 per year.

One number jumped out from the comparison table: the cost per trip. Car: $20.66 per round trip. Transit: $5.68. Every single workday, the car costs $15 more than the bus. Over 22 days, that compounds fast.

The downside? Commute time. The car takes 60 minutes door to door (with parking). Transit takes 120 minutes - two buses and a short walk. That is an hour of extra commuting per day. The realistic limit? Distance. A 10 km one-way commute takes about 33 minutes at 18 km/h. Manageable. At 15 km, the ride stretches to 50 minutes. At 20 km, most people switch to an e-bike or combine with transit.
