How much fuel did you actually pump at that gas station in Orlando? The receipt says 14.8 gallons. Your European brain converts that to about 60 liters. But which gallon? Because if the same receipt came from a petrol station near Heathrow, those 14.8 gallons would be 67.3 liters - not 56. A 20% difference from a word that looks identical on both sides of the Atlantic.
That gap between US and UK gallons is just one of three unit conversion traps that catch drivers, importers and car enthusiasts every single day. The other two: vehicle weight in pounds versus kilograms, and the surprisingly large effect of tire size on your speedometer reading.
The gallon that is not a gallon
A US gallon holds 3.78541 liters. A UK (Imperial) gallon holds 4.54609 liters. Same word, different volume, separated by the Atlantic Ocean and about two centuries of measurement divergence.
The practical consequences show up in fuel economy ratings. A car rated at 30 MPG in the US consumes 7.84 L/100km. The same car rated at 30 MPG in the UK consumes 9.42 L/100km. British MPG numbers always look better because the gallon is bigger. Car magazines rarely mention which gallon they mean.

Why a 3,500 lb car does not sound heavy until you convert it
American car listings quote curb weight in pounds. European ones use kilograms. The numbers look completely different for the same vehicle.
A Toyota RAV4 weighs about 1,700 kg on a European spec sheet. The same RAV4 on a US dealer lot is listed at 3,748 lb. Both correct. But 3,748 sounds like a heavy truck to a European, and 1,700 sounds like a lightweight to an American used to seeing four-digit pound figures.
The conversion factor is 2.20462. One kilogram equals 2.205 pounds. For quick mental math: double the kg and add 10%. So 1,500 kg is roughly 3,000 + 300 = 3,300 lb (actual: 3,307). Reverse: divide pounds by 2 and subtract 10%.
Where it gets genuinely dangerous: bridge weight limits. A sign reading "7.5 t" in Europe means metric tons (7,500 kg). A sign reading "7.5 tons" in the US means short tons (6,804 kg). A sign in the UK might mean long tons (7,620 kg). Three countries, three definitions of "ton," all different.

Your speedometer reads 100 but you are doing 97.8
This one surprises people the most. You swap your winter tires for summer, or upgrade from 16-inch to 17-inch rims. The car looks better. But the speedometer now lies by a different amount than before.
The reason is wheel circumference. Your speedometer counts wheel rotations per second and multiplies by the circumference of the original tire to estimate speed. Change the tire size, change the circumference, change the reading.
A standard 205/55 R16 tire has a circumference of 1,985 mm and a diameter of 632 mm. The wheel makes 504 revolutions per kilometer. Switch to a 225/45 R17 and the circumference drops to 1,993 mm, diameter changes to 634 mm. The difference is small - about 0.4% - but over thousands of kilometers it accumulates on the odometer.
Bigger changes have bigger effects. Going from stock 195/65 R15 to sporty 235/40 R18? That is a real shift. The diameter drops from 635 mm to 645 mm and the speedometer error reaches about 1.5%.
Does it matter? For daily driving, probably not. For a technical inspection, it might. EU regulations say the speedometer can read fast but never slow. Most manufacturers already set it 3-5% fast from the factory. Adding another 2% from a tire change keeps you within tolerance - but subtracting 2% (with larger-diameter tires) could push you outside it.

Five rules for automotive unit conversions
1. Know which gallon. If the source is American, it is a US gallon (3.785 L). If British, it is Imperial (4.546 L). Canadian fuel is sold in liters. Australian fuel is sold in liters. Only the US and UK still use gallons - and they use different ones. 2. Double and add 10% for kg to pounds. The factor is 2.205, but "double plus ten percent" is close enough for any conversation. For a precise number on a form, use the converter. 3. Curb weight is not gross weight. Curb weight (kerb weight) is the empty car with fluids. Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) is the maximum loaded weight. The difference is your payload capacity. Do not mix these up on a bridge weight limit sign. 4. Check tire circumference before and after any rim change. A plus-one upgrade (e.g. 205/55 R16 to 225/45 R17) should keep the overall diameter within 3% of the original. More than that and you risk speedometer error, ABS interference and potential inspection failure. 5. Three types of ton exist. Metric (1,000 kg), US short (907 kg) and UK long (1,016 kg). When a sign, a shipping document or a regulation says "tons" without specifying which - ask.
