Every luxury watch dial uses Roman numerals, but ask the owner what MMXXVI means and you get a blank stare. It is 2026. The Super Bowl does the same thing - Super Bowl LX is number 60. Movie credits, building cornerstones, chapter headings. Roman numerals are everywhere, and almost nobody reads them fluently.
That is a small problem. Here is a bigger one: a recipe says 3.785 liters of water and your jug is marked in gallons. Or a construction plan lists a 45-degree roof pitch and your engineering formula needs radians. These are not obscure academic puzzles. They are Tuesday afternoon problems.

Roman numerals: older than you think, simpler than you expect
The Roman numeral system uses seven symbols. That is it. Seven letters cover every number from 1 to 3,999.

The rules are straightforward. Add symbols left to right: M + M + X + X + V + I = 2026 = MMXXVI. When a smaller symbol appears before a larger one, subtract it: IV = 4 (5 minus 1), XC = 90 (100 minus 10).
Why does the system stop at 3,999? Because there is no standard symbol for 5,000. Romans had workarounds (bars over letters, nested symbols), but the convention used on clocks, in movies and on buildings tops out at MMMCMXCIX.
Some things people actually need to decode:
- Copyright lines: MCMXCIX = 1999 (older films)
- Super Bowl numbers: LIX = 59, LX = 60
- Building dates: MDCCLXXVI = 1776 (US Declaration of Independence)
- Clock faces: IIII instead of IV (a deliberate choice for visual symmetry)

Volume units: the transatlantic kitchen problem
A European recipe calls for 250 ml of cream. Your American measuring cup shows fluid ounces. A Canadian fuel station sells gas by the liter, but the car manual lists tank capacity in US gallons. A chemistry textbook uses cubic centimeters, a swimming pool contractor talks cubic meters.
Volume conversion is messy because two different gallon systems exist. The US gallon (3.785 liters) and the Imperial gallon (4.546 liters) differ by 20%. Use the wrong one and your recipe, your fuel estimate or your pool calculation is off by a fifth.

One fact that surprises people: 1 cubic centimeter equals exactly 1 milliliter. This is not an approximation. The liter was originally defined as the volume of 1 kg of water at 4 degrees C, which is 1,000 cm3. The definition has been refined, but for practical purposes the equality is exact.
Real examples:
- A bathtub holds about 300 liters = 79.3 US gallons
- A standard wine bottle is 750 ml = 25.4 fl oz
- A hot tub holds 1.5 m3 = 1,500 liters = 396 gallons
- One US cup = 236.6 ml (not 250 ml - that is a metric cup)

Angle units: degrees are not the only option
Most people think of angles in degrees. A right angle is 90 degrees, a full circle is 360. But mathematics, physics and engineering frequently use radians and gradians instead - and switching between them by hand is a recipe for errors.
Why does a full circle have 360 degrees? The Babylonians used base-60 arithmetic, and 360 is close to the number of days in a year. It is also divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 18, 20, 24, 30, 36, 40, 45, 60, 72, 90, 120 and 180. That makes subdivisions clean. But calculus does not care about clean subdivisions. Calculus cares about the relationship between arc length and radius, which is what radians measure.

The key conversion: 180 degrees = pi radians. Everything else follows from this.
Some conversions that come up in practice:
- Roof pitch 45 degrees = 0.7854 radians = 50 gradians
- Compass bearing 270 degrees (due west) = 4.7124 radians = 300 gradians
- Trigonometry: sin(30 degrees) = sin(pi/6) = exactly 0.5
- Engineering tolerance: 0.5 degrees = 0.00873 radians = 0.556 gradians
