Three numbers that nobody checks until the bill arrives. A 300 m2 lawn mowed weekly with an electric mower costs $5.10 for the entire season - that is April through October, 30 mows, 33.8 kWh total. Switch to a gas mower and the same lawn costs $20.25 in fuel. Switch to a robot and it drops to $2.52 in electricity but the machine itself costs $500-2,500.

Meanwhile, the decorative pond you are planning holds more weight than your car. A round pond with a 4-meter diameter at 1.2 meters deep contains 15,100 liters of water. That is 15.1 metric tons. The EPDM liner alone measures 7.4 x 7.4 meters and costs $384.

And then there is the electricity bill. A single 1,500-watt space heater running 8 hours a day consumes 360 kWh per month - that is $54 at the US average rate. More than a fridge, TV and gaming PC combined.

The $5 lawn - why electric mowing is almost free

An electric push mower draws 1.5 kW. A 300 m2 lawn takes 45 minutes to mow - that is 0.75 hours at 1.5 kW = 1.13 kWh per session. At $0.15/kWh that costs $0.17 per mow. Seventeen cents.

Over a full season (30 weekly mows): 33.8 kWh and $5.10 total. That is less than a single cup of coffee at a chain cafe.

The gas alternative? Same lawn, same 30 mows. A gas mower burns 0.9 liters per hour. At 45 minutes per session that is 0.68 liters per mow, 20.3 liters per season. At $1.00/L: $20.25. Four times more. Plus engine oil, spark plug replacements, and the smell.

The robot? It mows automatically for $2.52/season in electricity (8 kWh/month per 100 m2). The catch: $500-2,500 purchase price. The math works if your time is worth more than $15/hour, because the robot saves you 22.5 hours of mowing per season.

Three common mistakes with lawn mowing. First: buying gas for a small lawn. Under 300 m2, electric wins on every metric. Second: mowing too short. Cutting below 4 cm weakens roots and invites weeds - never remove more than a third of the blade height. Third: ignoring the time cost. At $15/hour, 22.5 hours of mowing per season is worth $337. The running cost is almost irrelevant compared to the labor.


15 tons of water in your garden - the pond nobody weighs

A cubic meter of water weighs exactly one metric ton. So a 4-meter round pond at 1.2 m depth - 15.1 m3 of water - puts 15.1 tons of downward pressure on your garden soil. The ground beneath had better be compact and level, or that liner is going to shift.

The EPDM liner formula is simple: pond dimension + (2 x depth) + 1 meter of overlap. For a 4 m round pond at 1.2 m: 4 + 2.4 + 1 = 7.4 meters in both directions. That is 54.8 m2 of liner at $7/m2 = $383.60.

Fish capacity follows the 5-per-cubic-meter rule. At 15.1 m3, the pond supports up to 75 goldfish. But 75 is the maximum - start with 15-20 and let the biological filter stabilize. One goldfish produces about 1 gram of ammonia per day, and the pump needs to cycle the entire volume twice per hour to keep water safe.

The depth choice matters more than the diameter. At 0.5 m you get a water feature - nice to look at, no fish. At 0.8 m you can grow water lilies but fish will not survive a hard winter. At 1.0 m fish can overwinter, barely. 1.2 m is the sweet spot - safe overwintering, room for plants at multiple depths, and enough volume for a proper biological filter.

EPDM versus PVC is not even close over the long run. EPDM costs $5-10/m2 and lasts 30-50 years. PVC costs $2-5/m2 and lasts 10-15 years. Over 30 years, EPDM costs $350 (one liner). PVC costs $350-500 (two or three liners plus the labor of draining, removing and reinstalling). Buy EPDM once.

Total build cost for a mid-size 3 m round pond (1.2 m deep): liner $287, pump $120-200, filter $80-150, 21 plants at $6-12 each = $126-252, fish $40-200. DIY total: $650-900. Professional installation adds $500-1,500.


The appliance nobody suspects

A 1,500-watt space heater. Eight hours per day. Thirty days per month. The math: 1,500 x 8 / 1,000 = 12 kWh per day. At $0.15/kWh that is $1.80 per day, $54 per month, $648 per year.

The space heater and the window AC are in a league of their own. Everything else is noise.

If your electricity bill spiked and you do not know why, start with the heaters. A portable oil radiator, a ceramic tower heater, an old baseboard unit - they all draw 1,000-2,000 watts and they run for hours. The fridge that everyone blames costs $5-7 per month. The space heater costs $54. It is not even close.

Phantom loads matter too, but less than people think. A device on standby draws 1-5 watts. Twenty devices on standby: 20-100 watts total, or $0.90-4.50/month. Annoying? Yes. Bill-doubling? No. The heater is the culprit, not the phone charger.


Five rules for the home that saves quietly

1. Mow electric, not gas. For lawns under 500 m2, an electric mower costs $5/season to run. Gas costs $20+. The electric mower is also quieter, cleaner and cheaper to buy.

2. Build the pond deeper, not wider. A 3 m pond at 1.2 m depth supports 42 fish and overwinters safely. A 4 m pond at 0.8 m depth holds more water but the fish die in February. Depth is the one thing you cannot change after construction.

3. Check wattage before buying any heating or cooling device. Anything above 1,000 watts running more than 4 hours per day will cost at least $18/month. A 2,000-watt heater costs $72/month. Insulation is always cheaper than heating.

4. Use EPDM, not PVC. For ponds, $7/m2 now saves $350 in 15 years when you do not have to replace the liner. For anything in the garden that touches water and sunlight, rubber outlasts plastic by decades.

5. Unplug the space heater in April. It sounds obvious. But every year, space heaters sit plugged in through summer, drawing 5 watts of standby power 24/7 for six months. That is only $3.24/year in standby - but it is also a fire risk in a forgotten corner.
