Because the food does most of the drinking for it. A 10 lb cat needs roughly 227 ml of water a day whichever bag you open. On canned food, 159 ml of that arrives already mixed into dinner, so only 2.3 fl oz has to come out of the bowl. Put the same cat on dry kibble and the food contributes 11 ml. The cat now has to drink 7.3 fl oz to land in the same place.
Same animal. Same requirement. Three times the trips to the water. That is worth knowing before you decide your cat has a drinking problem, or worse, decide it does not have one.
Where the 7.3 fluid ounces comes from
The model is not complicated. Cats are budgeted at 50 ml per kg of body weight per day, dogs at 60 ml. That gives a total requirement, which then gets nudged by how hard the animal worked and how warm the air was. Only after that does the food get subtracted, and this is the step almost nobody does in their head.
Kibble is about 10 percent water. Canned food is about 75. So on a dry diet roughly 95 percent of the requirement has to be lapped up, and on a wet diet only about 30 percent does. Everything else in the calculation is secondary to that one switch.

Notice how tight the cat rows are. A 10 lb cat on kibble is expected to drink 7.3 fl oz and the vet threshold sits at 9.2. There is not much daylight between normal and worth-a-phone-call, which is exactly why guessing is a bad idea for cats and a fairly forgiving one for dogs.
What if it is not a plain bowl of kibble?
What if you feed a mix?
Half dry and half wet by weight puts the same 10 lb cat at 5.0 fl oz a day, with 79 ml coming from the food. That is the sensible middle if the drinking is the thing you are trying to fix and the budget is the thing you are trying not to break. It moves the number by about a third without moving the bill much.
What if it is ninety degrees out?
Heat does more than the food does, in the opposite direction. That kibble-fed cat goes from 7.3 to 10.9 fl oz in warm weather and 13.1 fl oz when it is genuinely hot. Which puts it above the 9.2 fl oz threshold.
That is not an emergency. The threshold describes an animal at rest in normal conditions, so a cat drinking 13 fl oz during a heatwave is behaving correctly. The same 13 fl oz in a cool room in February is the number to take seriously. Context is doing the work here, not the figure on its own.
What if it is a dog?
A 40 lb dog on kibble drinks 35.0 fl oz, or about 4.4 cups, across roughly 3 bowl refills. Switch it to canned food and the drinking collapses to 11.0 fl oz, because 762 ml of water now arrives inside the food. Add a hot day and hard exercise and the same dog needs 81.8 fl oz, well past its 61.4 fl oz threshold and a genuinely large amount of water to keep in front of an animal.
What if the animal barely moves?
Here the two species split. Move that 10 lb cat from low activity to high and its drinking goes from 6.9 to 8.0 fl oz, a spread of about 16 percent. Do the same to the 40 lb dog and it goes from 29.7 to 45.5 fl oz, a spread of 53 percent. For a cat, activity is close to noise next to the food it eats. For a working dog it is the second biggest lever you have, and the reason a Sunday hike deserves a second bowl rather than the usual one.
The wet food answer has a price tag
If canned food solves the drinking problem, the obvious question is why anyone feeds kibble at all. The portion calculator answers that one quickly.
A 40 lb adult dog on moderate activity needs 985 kcal a day. That is a resting requirement of 615 kcal multiplied by 1.60 for life stage and activity. On standard dry kibble at 380 kcal per 100 g, that is 259 g a day, two meals of about 130 g, and $32.55 a month. Work out the same figures for how much to feed a 25 lb dog or how much to feed a 55 lb dog and the shape holds.
Now feed that dog the canned food that fixed its water intake. The portion becomes 1094 g a day, ninety cans a month, and $231.54.

Seven times the cost, give or take, right across the range. That is the honest trade, and it is worth pricing the middle option before committing to either end of it. A half and half bowl runs that 40 lb dog $70.67 a month, roughly 2.2 times kibble rather than 7.1 times, and drops its drinking from 35.0 to 23.9 fl oz. A little under half the available water benefit, for a little under a third of the available premium. For the cat the same middle sits at $29.23 a month.
Age moves the numbers more quietly
Both of the figures above assumed an adult animal on moderate activity. Change the life stage and they move, and life stage is not something you can read off a birthday without converting it first.
A 7 year old medium dog reads as 49 human years and sits in the mature adult band, with the senior threshold still 2 years away at 9. The old rule of seven human years per dog year would have called it 49 too, which is a coincidence rather than a vindication. The scale gives 15 human years for the first year, 9 more for the second, then a fixed step per year that grows with adult body size. Check a 1 year old dog in human years against a 10 year old dog in human years and the front-loading is obvious.
Size is the variable people underrate. At the same 7 years a large dog is already 54 human years and hits senior at 8, a year earlier than the medium dog. Cats run the slowest clock of the three: a 7 year old cat in human years is 44, and it does not reach senior until 10. By 15 years a cat is 76, geriatric, and on twice-yearly visits with bloodwork.
Why it matters for the bowl: that same 40 lb dog, moved from adult and moderate to senior and low activity, drops from 259 g to 194 g a day and from $32.55 to $24.38 a month. Nobody adjusts the scoop on a birthday. The portion that was right at five quietly becomes a quarter too much by twelve.
So what actually changes the bowl?
Food type, then weather, then everything else. Switching between kibble and canned food moves a cat's drinking by a factor of three and a dog's by the same, and no amount of fountain-buying or bowl-relocating comes close to that. Heat is the only thing in the model with comparable leverage, and it works in the other direction.
For most people the practical answer is not a diet change but a threshold. Know what your animal should be drinking at its weight and on its food, know the number above which you would call someone, and check the two against each other on a normal day rather than on the day you are already worried. For a 10 lb cat on kibble those numbers are 7.3 and 9.2 fl oz. They are closer together than most owners expect.
