The renovation started on paper. A bathroom. A driveway. Two projects, three materials, and a Saturday morning in the garage with a tape measure and a calculator. The bathroom: 10 x 12 ft floor, 20 x 8 ft of wall that needs fresh plaster before any tile goes up. The driveway: 20 x 12 ft, enough for one car and a strip of walkway alongside. None of this is glamorous work. But every bag of plaster, every box of tiles, every pallet of pavers has a number attached - and getting those numbers wrong means a second trip to the supply yard, a batch mismatch on the tiles, or three leftover pallets of stone sitting in the rain.
Here is how the math played out.
Step one - plaster the bathroom walls
The walls come first. You cannot tile over bare block. The bathroom has a single 20 ft run of wall at 8 ft height with one window and one door to subtract - about 36 sq ft of openings. Net plaster area: 124 sq ft.
Cement render at 0.6 inches per coat, two coats: the calculator returned 25 bags of 55 lb thin-set. That is 1,355 lb of material. Gypsum would have dropped it to 16 bags. Acrylic would have pushed it to 39. The choice was cement - this is a wet area, and cement render handles moisture better than gypsum.
At $12 per bag plus $4/sq ft labor: materials $300, labor $496, total $796 for the plaster alone.

Step two - tile the bathroom floor
Once the plaster cured (seven days for cement render, not two like some forums claim), the floor was ready. A 10 x 12 ft bathroom floor - 120 sq ft. Standard 12 x 12 in porcelain tiles, 1/8 in grout joints, 10% waste allowance, 5/16 in trowel notch with thin-set mortar.
The calculator returned: 132 tiles with waste. At 10 tiles per box, that means 14 boxes. Plus 2 bags of 50 lb adhesive and 1 pack of 10 lb grout.
At $5/sq ft for porcelain tiles, $20/bag adhesive, $15/pack grout: tiles $600, adhesive $40, grout $15 - total $655.
One detail worth noting. The calculator flagged that 12 x 12 in tiles do not qualify as large format (the threshold is 24 inches). No back-buttering needed. If those tiles had been 24 x 24 in rectified porcelain - a popular choice right now - the adhesive would have jumped 20% to 3 bags, and the trowel would need to go up to 1/2 in.

Step three - pave the driveway
The bathroom was done in a week. The driveway took three weekends. A 20 x 12 ft single-car driveway - 240 sq ft - with 4 x 8 in Holland pavers (the classic brick-look rectangle), 3 1/8 in thick (driveway grade), 10% waste in a running bond pattern.
The calculator returned: 1,188 pavers. At 480 per pallet, that is 3 pallets. Under the pavers: 8.03 tons of crushed aggregate (8 in deep) and 1.43 tons of bedding sand (1.5 in) - a combined 9.45 tons of base material.
That number surprised the most. Nearly 10 tons of gravel and sand under 240 sq ft of pavers. The pavers themselves weigh another 2-3 tons. A delivery truck dropped it all in one load - half the driveway was buried under aggregate before the first paver was laid.
At $4/sq ft for pavers, $35/ton for aggregate and sand, $8/sq ft for labor: pavers $960, aggregate $331, labor $1,920 - total $3,211.

Materials and labor split almost 50/50. That ratio holds surprisingly well across most construction projects - the stuff costs about as much as the people who install it.
Five lessons from this project
1. Plaster goes first, tiles go last. Cement render needs 7 days to cure. Start plastering while the tile order ships. By the time the boxes arrive, the walls are ready.
2. The base weighs more than the surface. Under 240 sq ft of pavers sits 9.45 tons of aggregate and sand. Under 120 sq ft of tiles sits 86 lb of adhesive. The hidden material always costs more time and money than people expect.
3. One extra box of tiles is not optional. Tile colors vary between production runs. One box from the same dye lot, stored flat and dry, is the only insurance against a cracked tile in year three. Most retailers accept returns on unopened boxes within 90 days - buy the extra, return it later if unused.
4. Round up, never down. 132 tiles at 10 per box means 13.2 boxes. Buy 14. Every partial box rounds up. Every delivery fee is flat-rate. Ordering one more pallet of pavers on a second truck costs $150 in delivery alone - it was cheaper to have 60 spare stones sitting in the garage.
5. Three calculators beat one spreadsheet. Each material has its own consumption formula. Tile adhesive depends on trowel notch size and tile format. Plaster depends on type and thickness per coat. Paver base depends on area and compaction depth. No single spreadsheet handles all three - but three specialized calculators do.
