The lumber yard closes at five. It is 3:47 PM and there are three items on the list: flooring for the master bedroom, bricks for the garden wall out back, and AAC blocks for the new garage extension. The problem is not finding the materials - every big-box store stocks all three. The problem is knowing how much. One pack short means a second trip with a delivery fee. Fifty bricks too many means a pallet gathering moss behind the shed for the next three years.
That scenario plays out on construction sites every week. The fix is simple: measure twice, calculate once, order with a known waste margin. These three calculators do exactly that - flooring in packs, bricks in pieces with mortar bags, and AAC blocks in pallets with adhesive.
The bedroom floor: 18 x 13 ft, laminate
A 18 x 13 ft bedroom has 234 sq ft of bare subfloor. With 10% waste for cuts and fitting, that becomes 257.4 sq ft of material to buy. Laminate comes in packs of about 25.3 sq ft, so you need 11 packs. Those 11 packs actually cover 278.3 sq ft, leaving a surplus of 20.9 sq ft - enough for a couple of replacement planks if something gets damaged later.
Add material at $3/sq ft, underlayment at $0.30/sq ft, and installation labor at $2/sq ft, and the total comes to $1,364. That is $772 for the laminate itself, $77 for underlayment, and $515 for the installer. The flooring is the cheap part - labor is where the budget goes.
Room sizes vary. A 12 ft long bedroom needs fewer packs than a 20 ft open-plan living room. A 25 ft great room with vinyl SPC at $5/sq ft can easily hit $2,500 in material alone. The calculator handles all three materials - laminate, vinyl and hardwood - with different pack sizes for each.
The garden wall: 30 x 9 ft, standard brick
A 30 x 9 ft garden wall in single wythe (one brick thick, 4 in) with standard bricks and 3/8 in mortar joints covers 270 sq ft gross. Subtract three windows at 15 sq ft each and the net area drops to 225 sq ft.
Standard US bricks measure 8 x 3.75 x 2.25 in. With 3/8 in joints, that works out to 6.55 bricks per sq ft of wall face. Multiply by the net area and add 10% waste: 1,622 bricks. The mortar volume is 14.02 cu ft, which means 29 bags of 60 lb Type S mortar (or 24 bags of 80 lb if you prefer larger bags).
Wall length is the variable that changes everything. A short 10 ft accent wall needs around 500 bricks. A 40 ft property boundary can eat over 2,000. A full perimeter - 60 ft or 80 ft of combined wall length - puts you in pallet territory. The calculator also handles double wythe (structural walls) where the brick count doubles and mortar increases by roughly 70%.
The garage extension: 40 x 9 ft, AAC blocks
AAC - autoclaved aerated concrete - is a different animal. Where a standard concrete masonry unit weighs 35 lb, an AAC block of the same face size weighs 8-12 lb. It insulates at roughly R-1.1 per inch compared to R-0.2 for CMU. A 12-inch AAC wall delivers about R-13.2 without any added insulation.
For a 40 x 9 ft wall with 24 x 8 x 12 in blocks, thin-bed adhesive, 5% waste, and four windows at 15 sq ft each, the calculator returns 237 blocks, 252 lb of adhesive (6 bags of 50 lb), and 7 pallets at roughly 37 blocks per pallet.
The adhesive quantity is where AAC really shines over traditional masonry. Thin-bed joints use about 0.8 lb per sq ft of wall face - compare that to brick mortar at roughly 8 lb per sq ft for traditional joints. Less material, thinner joints, fewer thermal bridges.

Five lessons from this project
1. Waste percentages are not the same across materials. Laminate and brick both need 10% for a typical project - but AAC blocks cut so cleanly with a hand saw that 5% is standard. Overshoot the waste allowance and you pay for material that sits unused. Undershoot it and you wait for a second delivery.
2. The bonding agent is the hidden cost multiplier. Brick mortar uses about 8 lb per sq ft for traditional joints. AAC thin-bed adhesive needs only 0.8 lb per sq ft - ten times less. For flooring, the underlayment is cheap ($0.30/sq ft) but skipping it voids the warranty on most floating floors.
3. One pack short is worse than three packs over. A second delivery trip adds $50-100 in fees. Laminate from a different production run may not match the color. Bricks from a different kiln batch can be 2-3 shades off. Always order from one batch and keep a few spares.
4. Labor costs more than material on floors. In the bedroom example, laminate cost $772 but installation cost $515 - nearly 40% of the total. For hardwood floors, labor often exceeds material cost. Get quotes from at least three installers before committing.
5. AAC is gaining ground in residential construction. It weighs one-fifth of a concrete block, insulates three times better per inch, and one block replaces 8-10 bricks. The catch: it absorbs moisture and needs a weather-resistant finish on exterior walls. It also has lower compressive strength (290-725 psi vs 1,900+ psi for CMU), so it is not suitable for multi-story load-bearing without reinforcement.
